Caltech's Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is dedicated to exploring the human experience—from the evolution of culture and institutions to social, political, and economic behavior, from the products of the imagination to the conceptual underpinnings of science. Committed to excellent teaching and rigorous analysis, HSS scholars apply cutting-edge methodologies to deepen knowledge and understanding of our world.
View from the Chair:
HSS brings together scholars with a wide range of expertise. They come to Caltech to pursue their passion for research and to introduce their disciplines to students devoted to science and engineering. Rather than reinforce the notion of two cultures, we strive to build bridges that weave together the qualitative with the quantitative. The humanities and social sciences bring essential perspective to important problems that our societies face. Science and engineering help solve a lot of social problems; at the same time, these solutions must find traction within societal structures that determine what succeeds and what fails.
